Version 6
Features: Version 6 has been released for
AIX, Solaris, and HP-UX, and Linux x86. Here is a general summary
of what we have added to SarCheck Version 6:
- Multiday analysis of ps data. Thanks to
the groups of SarCheck power users at our conferences in
Chicago in 2002 and 2003 for their suggestions on this
and other topics.
- A more flexible and consistent directory
structure (HP-UX and AIX). You now have the
ability to put SarCheck in any directory you choose and
we will put all files in the /opt/sarcheck directory by
default. We will use the bin, etc, and doc subdirectories
that people expect.
- Automatic update of activation keys when software
updates are installed. The installation of
SarCheck updates is now much easier for customers with
more than 5 or 10 licenses.
- Production of graphs without any accompanying
text. Many of you wanted to use SarCheck to
produce graphs from gnuplot. While free tools like SARGE
already exist, many of our licensees asked for this
feature to be built into SarCheck.
- Enhanced diagnostics. In order to
reproduce a few of the most unlikely bugs, we've given
ourselves the ability to see the exact command, get more
information on the usage of SarCheck's internal data
structures, etc. We have no intention of monitoring
anything without your knowledge or adding spyware. The
diagnostics will require your using a switch and sending
us the output.
- Enhanced detection of a memory shortage (AIX).
We now collect information on the number of page ins and
page outs to the paging spaces. This information is
typically captured by sar but it is missing in the AIX
implementation of sar. We get this data from vmstat -s
and collect it along with ps -elf data.
- A table of contents in the HTML report.
We now provide a table of contents to help you quickly
navigate the HTML output of SarCheck.
- User-settable defaults for the date format.
In addition to using the -dmy and -ymd switches, we now
allow the default date format shown in SarCheck's output
to be set in the sarcheck_parms file.
- The location of graphs specified by the
"src" attribute of <img> tags in the HTML
output can be different than the physical
location of the graphs. This makes it easier to put
SarCheck's output directly on your intranet, web server, etc.
Development of SarCheck Version 7 has begun and a page dedicated to Version 7 is starting to come together.
