dmap - A Free Disk Mapping Tool for Solaris SPARC

dmap lets you translate disk names between the c0t0d0 format and the sd322 format used by utilities like sar and iostat. This utility is much faster than the available scripts that do the same thing and is a spinoff from our development of SarCheck for Solaris SPARC, a commercial product. We're providing dmap for free as a way of thanking the Solaris community for the success of SarCheck. The output of dmap looks like this:

dmap 0.04 - A utility to translate disk device names from the c0t0d0
convention to the convention used by utilities such as sar and iostat,
which is the driver binding name and instance number.

This free software was developed as a spinoff of the development of
our SarCheck performance analysis utility. To try SarCheck or for
more information, please visit www.sarcheck.com or www.aptitune.com
For other options, try dmap -h. To see the license: dmap -l

c0t0d0 = dad0
c0t2d0 = sd2

More information about switches can be found in the usage text. This page contains the usage text, license text, and finally, a downloadable copy of dmap.

requirements

dmap works on 32- and 64-bit versions of Solaris SPARC and has been tested on versions 2.5.1 through 2.8. Resource utilization is fairly trivial. dmap reads the /etc/path_to_inst file and runs the following command:

/usr/bin/ls -l /dev/rdsk/*s0

It then tries to match things up. There are a number of scripts floating around that do the same thing and dmap is designed to do it more efficiently. This version of dmap works with some SANs but probably not all of them. If you have some ideas about how to improve dmap, please let us know!

usage text

Usage: dmap [-q][-h|-z|-l]
       -q: suppress the beginning descriptive paragraphs
       -h: print this help text instead of disk information
       -l: print the license agreement
       -z: zero-fill the instance number to improve sorting

To sort the output of this program, do something like this:

dmap -q -z > foobar; sort -k 3 foobar

Here is dmap. For MSIE, use the right mouse button to click on this link - dmap.taz (7886 bytes) and select "Save Target As". For other browsers, check the documentation. If you're FTPing this file and there's a PC involved, be sure the PC knows that this file is binary and not text. This file is a compressed tar archive. To install, cd to the directory you want dmap to reside in and use the following command:

zcat < dmap.taz | tar xvf -

We hope that you'll find dmap to be a useful tool and we encourage you to distribute it throughout the Solaris SPARC community. And of course, feel free to request an evaluation copy of SarCheck for Solaris so that you can see what we *really* do.
